BRAMPTON Island is for sale again.

After owning the Mackay oasis for more than seven years, and doing little with it, United Petroleum have listed the island for sale.

Currently a dormant former holiday resort, United Petroleum had big plans to redevelop it into a seven star location.

The company had development approval to transform the island, including knocking the existing guest building down and building six new accommodation buildings.

That development application is now being used to sweeten the sale, which was listed this week.

Mackay region Mayor Greg Williamson said it had been a shame to see "one of the best islands" in Queensland remained shut since 2011.

"I would dearly love to see Brampton back in the tourism game, it has a wonderful history in our region," he said.

"When Brampton was in full swing it not only had a lot of trade from long term visitors, it had a lot of tourism trade out of Mackay day trips. It was one of the most frequented day trip islands."

The island was bought by United Limited in 2011 for $5.9million and hasn't been open since.

The advertisement to sell Brampton states it is "Australian leisure and tourism's most compelling and best in class asset opportunity".

Key Investment considerations include:

Located in one of Australia's Premier leisure destinations - Whitsunday Islands

Secure tenure and protected beachfront location;

Exclusive use rights over both Brampton and Carlisle Islands;

Multiple development and operational options;

Current Development Approvals in place (to July 2023);

Includes sealed tarmac runway - one of only two in the Whitsundays;
