Fire crews called to Fitzgerald State School, North Mackay after smoke seen in classroom

Four fire crews rushed to the school as students were evacuated when the emergency response was triggered by a smoking classroom.

A North Mackay state school was evacuated after smoke was seen coming out of one of its classrooms

Four crews from the Queensland Fire Department rushed to Fitzgerald State School just before 12.50pm, and quickly found the source of the smoke.

No fire or flames were found by the first responders, with the smell of smoke limited to a single room.

The school’s fire alarm was still blaring until 1.15pm, as students followed evacuation protocols to neatly line up on the oval.

A QFD spokeswoman said the roof space was also investigated, with no sign of fire. A stop was placed on all appliances.

Ergon Energy employees are now at the school inspecting how the smoke could have started.

From the four crews called, two were still at the school at 1.20pm, but were expected to leave shortly.
