Fire crews called after grass fire spreads near Blacks Beach Tavern

Multiple crews worked to extinguish a large fire after it quickly spread over grassland near a popular Mackay tavern. PHOTOS

Blacks Beach resident Phil Jeston woke to the sight and sound of flames outside his bedroom window as multiple fire crews battled a large blaze for more than four hours.

The fire took hold of grassland near the popular Blacks Beach Tavern and spread quickly.

The first call came in about 1.30am about a 10m by 10m grass fire near the Blacks Beach Tavern and three fire crews were tasked to the Blacks Beach Rd and Chenoweth Drive site.

By 1.45am it had spread with multiple emergency calls being made about a large grass fire 100m by 100m heading towards Blacks Beach Cove.

Residents woke to the glow and crackling of the fire, with emergency services sirens going off in the background.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said crews has the fire under control by 3.10am by working multiple section to flank it, however about 4am the blaze had jumped one of the breaks.

Mr Jeston woke up about 4.30am and took photos of the fire from his home.

Crews backburned the area to box the fire in and it was out just before 6am.

No one was injured and no property was damaged.

Blacks Beach Rd was closed between 2.30am and 6.30am, with police directing traffic, as fire crews worked to extinguish the fire and a smoke warning was issued to Eimeo residents just after 4.30am urging everyone to stay inside and keep windows and doors closed.

Fire crews remained in the area after the fire was out as areas were still smouldering about 6.19am.

All crews were able to leave by 7.30am.

Investigations into the cause are ongoing.
