A facility right here in Mackay will soon house more than $2m worth of cutting edge equipment - with a majority focused on mine safety.

Resources Centre of Excellence general manager Steven Boxall said the Paget site was just weeks away from amassing $2m worth of equipment.

"A lot of it is to do with safety, so we've been lucky enough to partner with a company called Strata Worldwide, who provide cutting edge safety and communication equipment for underground mining environments," Mr Boxall said.

"We are in the process of rolling out systems that will ensure our underground environment will be the safest and have the best control measures possible.

"That's a real testament that industry believes in what we're doing and that we will be operating our facility to the highest quality standard."

This safety equipment includes handheld communication devices, proximity detection systems that can slow or stop operating equipment if anyone comes within a certain radius and wireless monitoring systems that can detect gas in the environment through the installation of sensors.

Mr Boxall said the products were new to market and not widely available.

"We provide an environment where those products can be tested and proven that they work and people can be comfortable and familiar with the products," he said.

"Companies can come here and test the equipment to make sure that it is suitable for application."

Members of the Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry, which is exploring last year's Grosvenor disaster, also visited the RCOE last year for a tour of the facility and its equipment.
