A Mackay man has entered 2022 in the best possible fashion, after buying a winning ticket in the $40m New Year’s Eve Gold Lotto draw.

He became a multi-millionaire after holding one of the 17 division-one-winning tickets, with each entry scoring $2,352,941.18.

The Mackay man, in his 50s, bought a ticket on a “last-minute whim”.

“We were just having a pretty quiet night, so I thought I’d check my ticket,” he said.

“My wife didn’t believe me at all, we just kept looking at the ticket.

“Multi-millionaire - I like hearing that.”

The ticket was bought online, with the winning numbers being 32, 14, 15, 8, 43 and 20, while the supplementary numbers were 35 and 31.

The man plans on “working less and holidaying more” after his $2.3 million win.

“Things like this just don’t happen to us,” he said.

“We can do lots of exciting stuff with this.”
