One of the most popular drive-throughs in Mackay has submitted plans for a major expansion and refurbishment.

The KFC on Nebo Road/Bruce Highway will be refreshing its branding colour scheme and expanding into a two-lane drive-through.

Documentation also notes the refreshment of the franchises logo signage and recognisable bucket sign, which will be replaced in the new “squashed bucket style”.

“The store is about to undergo maintenance work and a store refresh to bring the store up to the current KFC brand standards,” documents revealed.

“(Including) a dual lane drive thru (which) was previously turfed in anticipation of it being added in the future.

“The new logo and branding (will) include replacement of the existing bucket on the pylon sign with the new squashed bucket style sign.”

Documents say the proposed dual-lane drive-through was in the original development approval plans.

Yet only a single lane was completed due to cost issues when constructed.

A separate sign licence application will be submitted for the refreshed branding proposed.

The “squashed bucket” logo shows only the head of Colonel Sanders with his southern string tie against a white and red striped background.

Concept images show the drive-through parapets and accent pieces are to be repainted from their current white, to black or dark grey.

Red semi-transparent shades are also added to the parapets' Hinton Street-facing side.

Documentation says minor height increases are planned to “better conceal” equipment on the roof.

New cladding of what looks like a light-coloured timber will wrap the highway-facing sides.

The application is currently being considered by Mackay Regional Council.
