Carmichael Mine is edging closer to export, with the first of 360 rail wagons arriving through the Port of Mackay this week.
The trains will contain two locomotives, 86 wagons and carry about 7300 tonnes of coal on trips from the mine.
Bowen Rail Company general manager Brendan Lane said the locomotives were an impressive sight.
“The train length will total 1400 metres, which equates to approximately 283 Ford Falcons, or 14 rugby league football fields end-to-end,” he said.
“The locomotives have now arrived at the Carmichael Rail Network with the wagons to follow over the coming weeks.”
Bowen Rail Company will haul the coal from the Carmichael Mine to North Queensland Export Terminal, with the first load on track to be exported in 2021.
Bravus Mining and Resources CEO David Boshoff said the support from local councils had been amazing.
“The support shown by local councils and mayors... had been unwavering, and we’re thrilled for them to see first-hand how that support had translated to jobs and contracts for local suppliers,” he said.
“We have awarded more than $2.2 billion in contracts during construction with more than 88 per cent of our contracts being delivered right here in Queensland.”
Mr Lane said coal exportation would continue to increase jobs throughout the region.
“Bowen Rail recently announced the construction of a rail yard being delivered for the business’ future which will see more than 100 construction jobs provided through local Bowen company, Hillery Group,” he said.
“Recruitment is under way for train drivers and other roles including supervisors, maintenance planners, trainees and corporate positions which will see more than 50 new people employed for Bowen Rail Company throughout this initial phase.”
