A mining giant has the green light to more than double its Mackay-based apprentice and training facility.
BHP Operation Services requested an expansion of its BHP FutureFit Academy at 102 Farrellys Rd in Paget by opening a workshop in a building formerly used as part of the site’s transport depot.
Mackay Regional Council has approved the development of the educational establishment, which will allow the company to expand its training spots from 72 to 168.
The boosted numbers follow BHP’s position it would not invest in any further growth in Queensland, with the new $850 million upgrade to the Hay Point Coal Terminal touted as an investment not to be repeated under the State Government’s increased coal royalties.
Documents lodged to council in September this year state the Mackay academy has both classroom and workshop settings to train BHP staff and apprentices employed in mines across the Bowen Basin.
It includes diesel fitters while BHP actively recruits for people looking to “kickstart” their maintenance careers through a 12 month training program.
Diesel fitter trainees at the academy will complete a Certificate II in Engineering – Production Technology and learn how to maintain equipment like bulldozers, graders, loaders, excavators, dump trucks and more.
Work is on a 7-on, 7-off roster with day shift hours from 6am to 4.30pm and night shift from 1.30pm to midnight.
