MACKAY Regional Council has approved a development application for Brampton Island, hopefully signalling plenty of jobs both in construction and operation.

The much-loved island, which was bought by United Petroleum in 2010 for $5.9million, has been closed to the public for about five years.

However, the new approval will hopefully see the island, 32km north-west of Mackay, become a hive of activity.

Mackay Tourism general manager Stephen Schwer welcomed the council's approval for tourism potential as well as job opportunities.

"If you think about the economic development of a region, the main thing you want to do is create employment, so of course the redevelopment of the island, both in the construction stage and then for the life of the development, will require people to be working there," he said.

"It's not just about the electricians, the builders, the plumbers and all those people that are required; it's about the materials being supplied and the food being supplied for the workers."

Council acting chief executive officer David McKendry said the proposed resort would be a combination of new and refurbished buildings.

"It is another example of developers looking to the positive future of the region by committing to larger projects," he said.

Mr McKendry said the market the development was being aimed at and timing of construction was completely dependent on the developer.

"The applicant will now be required to undertake detailed design work for the construction and servicing of the development, including obtaining other necessary approvals," he said.

The Daily Mercury was unable to contact United Petroleum before deadline yesterday.
