Lord Mayor’s caffeine fix promise to Brisbane

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has vowed to bring more coffee carts to local parks, as the battle for city hall goes into overdrive.

Cr Schrinner said 60 parks had been identified as possible locations where coffee cart vendors could set up shop.

The pledge is the latest in a long list of promises being made in the lead up to the local council election on March 16, including an ambitious $6 million plan announced by Greens mayoral candidate Jonathan Sriranganathan yesterday to improve the health of the Brisbane River to the point that residents can swim in it.

Labor’s lord mayoral candidate Tracey Price announced in December Brisbane residents would get access to more 10c container recycling bins and there would be a $2.8 million a year boost to improve suburban drainage.

Cr Schrinner said his big coffee promise would allow mobile food and drink businesses run at approved locations at designated timeslots, with a lower registration fee of $450 a year.

While Brisbane has more than 2100 parks and over 1000 playgrounds, only 15 coffee carts and 44 food trucks currently have permission to set up shop at a small number of locations.

The council also further promised the new approved locations would not compete with existing coffee shops in the area. .

“Brisbane is renowned for having the best lifestyle in Australia as well as some of the best coffee so we’re going to bring them together in our parks, playgrounds and dog off-leash areas,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Some of the playgrounds we’ve delivered are more like mini theme parks and as a father of four, I know how they can keep kids entertained for free for hours.

“Under this plan, we’re also supporting Brisbane’s growing range of mobile food businesses, giving them more opportunities to reach customers.”
