Ipswich club shares in providing hope

The Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club is staging a fund-raiser race meeting next month, not for the farmers, but for "Hope For a Cure''.

MOST people dig deep when asked to support a charity.

Currently there's a mass media campaign designed to assist drought stricken farmers throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

Our friends in the bush are doing it very tough, that's for sure.

The Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club is staging a fund-raiser race meeting next month, not for the farmers, but for "Hope For a Cure''.

The purpose is to raise monies to assist breast cancer research.

The date is Saturday night, September 29.

The club has lined up a decent list of sponsors and hopes the general public will come along to support the cause.

There will be raffles for gift baskets and gift vouchers.

A Fear Zafonic Straw will be raffled. Fear Zafonic is an Eng-lish import who stands at stud at Tony and Jane Apap's A Team property at Gatton.

The theme for the night will be the colour pink.

Unfortunately, the club can't afford the singer of that name to attend.

The club will donate $100 for every winner on the night wearing the pink number eight rug.

A race set aside for greyhounds trained by women will be run.

It's a fifth grade over 520 metres worth $5,000. That's double the normal prizemoney allocation for a Saturday night fifth grade at Ipswich.

Another feature will be the Beat Breast Cancer Cup over 732 metres, for greyhounds that have not won a class one event over 650 metres or longer.

It's also a $5,000 race.

Sponsors are the Peschke family, Don Evans Plumbing, Ultra Tune Booval, West Moreton Pet Foods, the A Team and the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club.

The club would be keen to hear from anyone keen to jump on board as a sponsor.

Late September will be a busy time at the Ipswich Showgrounds.

The Magical Puppy Auction to being held on Sunday, the 23rd.

Aptly-named Darwin Cup winner

LAST Sunday's $25,000 to the winner Darwin Cup was won by the only locally trained greyhound in the race.

The dog was Crocodile Crush, trained by Steele Bolton.

What a great name for a greyhound trained up there.

Crocodile Crush had box one and paid $10.80 for a win.

Bolton is the vice president of the Darwin club.

Crocodile Crush, a son of Bekim Bale, started his racing in Western Australia where he won three of his 13 starts.

He has won 11 races in Darwin.

Well-suited runner for later start

THERE'S a slightly later start to greyhound racing at the Ipswich Showgrounds today and tomorrow.

Today's 10 event card begins at 4.03pm.

Tomorrow the first race is at 5.26pm.

Searching for winners, the Kerry Perrett trained Passive Protest looks well suited in race five today, from box eight.

For tomorrow night, go for the Jeanette Cauchi trained Regal Jade in race six. It's the first time in her short career of nine starts that she is drawn box one.

Hopefully she will know how to handle the draw.
