GATTON based trainer Tony Apap is attempting to win the feature winter double at the Ipswich Showgrounds.

Last Saturday the Apap owned and trained Jalapeno staged a huge performance to run down tearaway leader Champagne Sally in the $8260 to the winner Ipswich Grand Prix over 732 metres.

On the same card, Apap won a heat of the Ipswich Young Guns with Give It Some who exploded out of box seven and led all the way in a best of the night time of 30.56 seconds for the 520 metres course.

The Dan Henry owned Give It Some has box four in tomorrow night's $10,780 to the winner Young Guns final.

Whilst four isn't a desirable draw, if Give It Some jumps as quickly as last week, it could be a case of "all over red rover.''

Other heat winners last week were Nakuru, for Kevin Ellis, in 30.58; Bad Neighbour, for Evelyn Harris in 30.61; and Alpha Ulysses, for Jim Heddles in 30.88.

Bad Neighbour led all the way from box one and has that draw tomorrow night.

Jalapeno's next mission is the National Distance Championship, which has heats at Albion Park next Thursday night over 710 metres.

The grand final is in Melbourne at Sandown Park on Friday, August 25.

Eye-catching similarities

RACECALLER Anthony Jeffress couldn't believe his eyes after calling race four at the Showgrounds last Friday.

The winner Maywyn's Noise ran 25.08 with Jeffress pointing out that the winner of race three also ran 25.08.

Not only that, the winner of the third race was Maywyn Rewards, who is a litter brother to Maywyn's Noise.

The pair are by Dyna Lach-lan, out of Quartet Dream. They are trained by former Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club president Bob Essex.

Not only did the pair run the same overall race time, they ran an identical first sectional of 13.45 seconds. But wait, there's more.

Race eight was won by Maywyn Promises, a litter sister who went pretty close to the time recorded by her brothers. She ran 25.11.

The coincidences don't stop there. Maywyn's Noise and Maywyn Rewards both won their maiden at their first start and it was on the same day, May 23 last year at Ipswich.

Their times weren't the same though. Maywyns Noise ran 25.80 and Maywyn Rewards ran 25.73 that day.

Time to nominate

IPSWICH club officials are hoping their phone and email both run hot over the next few days with nominations for the Rosewood and District Community Bank sponsored Magical Puppy Auction.

The closing date is next Tuesday, with no provision for an extension.

The sale is on Sunday, September 23.

Qld focus in Darwin

THERE'S Queensland interest in the heats of the Darwin Cup on Sunday night.

Mick Emery, from Churchable, has his smart Ipswich and Albion Park dog Knocker Knock drawn box three in heat one.

Tom Tzouvelis, from Ormeau, has Soft Sand drawn box seven, also in heat one.

Del Rey, for Tzouvelis, has box two in heat three.

Tzouvelis won the Darwin Cup last year with Off and On.

This year's Darwin Cup carries first prize money of $25,000.

Consider this

A GOOD speech should be like a woman's skirt.

Long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.
