DOGWATCH

THE Dash For Cash is a new race on the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club calendar.

Sponsored by Just Greyhound Photos (Rick and Di O'Donnell), it will highlight racing over the next two Saturday nights.

The race series will be run over the blink and miss distance of 288m with the final worth $5000 overall.

Six heats will be run tomorrow night on races 4-9 on the 10 race program, which starts at 5.29pm.

Race 4 heat 1 (6.31pm): Ipswich track specialist Little Ach Cee, for premiership trainer Col Byers, looks hard to beat off box 2. Ach Cee possesses good early speed and is suited to speed racing.

Race 5 heat 2 (6.51pm): Data Base box 7, for Reg Hazelgrove, is the top pick. Data Base has raced four times at the track/distance for three wins.

Race 6 heat 3 (7.11pm): Rapid Explosion, box 7 for Roan Enright, has had two recent wins at the distance since resuming from a spell both in quick time. As the name suggests, the greyhound is quick from the boxes.

Race 7 heat 4 (7.27pm): Aim, box 5 for Terry Guymer, is going for five on end on this track. Aim has had three runs at the 288m distance for two wins and a second, handling all draws.

Race 8 heat 5 (7.54pm): Jetta Knight, box 4 for Tony Brett, missed the start the last couple at Albion Park. But the class runner of this field could atone for recent efforts.

Race 9 heat 6 (8.16pm): Farmor On Fire, box 3 for Steven Scott, is another suited to the sprint journey. Farmor On Fire is a fast beginner.

With six heats to be decided tomorrow night, the heat winners and the fastest two second placegetters will qualify for next week's final.

Muzzles Restaurant will be open for dinner along with the snack bar, bar and tote facilities.

The on track pick 7 winners jackpot is worth $7900. Purchase a racebook and fill out the entry form.

Bright future for Jarrod

AT Ipswich last Tuesday you would have heard an unfamiliar voice broadcasting races six and seven on the program. He is 19 year old Jarrod Wessel.

Born and raised in Bundaberg by parents Tina and Chris, Jarrod comes from a thoroughbred racing family background.

His grandfather Henry and his father owned a number of horses over the years, including a good country sprinter Supermorn in the 1980s, which won about 30 races.

Jarrod's broadcasting career started at the Bundaberg gallops in 2015 when asked to stand in for regular caller Trevor Halter. This just happened to be the biggest meeting of the year, Bundy Cup day.

Jarrod's first broadcast of greyhound racing was in Bundaberg at the start of 2016 filling in again for Halter. This time it was a three-month stint.

During 2016, Jarrod made regular trips to Brisbane to attend race meetings on a Saturday at Doomben to practise his broadcasting in a spare broadcast box.

During these visits he met Radiotab's chief broadcaster David Fowler who asked to listen to recordings of his broadcasts.

Fowler was impressed with the broadcasts and from that first meeting has become a mentor for young Jarrod to hone his skills.

In 2016, Jarrod did his senior year of schooling, also doing work experience at RadioTab.

In February 2017, the young race caller made the move from Bundaberg to Brisbane when given the chance to work part-time for RadioTab.

He has been given training in all aspects of the radio station from behind the scene's technical work to producing magazine style talk shows, to tote calling and going out to the various race track and broadcasting the three codes of racing.

He has got the opportunity to the call gallops at Doomben, Ipswich and Gatton.

Jarrod has a bright future in the broadcasting ranks.

We wish him well.

Zammit's winning treble

TRAINER Tony Zammit produced a winning treble at Ipswich on Tuesday.

It was with Outlaw Donny (race 1) in a blistering 24.99 for a maiden win. Then Isn't She Special (race 3) in 25.28 and in Race 7, for Vision Of Love clocking 30.70.

Fab Fit, for Darren Russell, was most impressive in scoring over the 431m in 24.85.

Farewell Jeff

IT WAS sad to hear of the passing of Waterford trainer Jeff Jones during the week.

Jeff, a founding member of the QGBOTA and former president of that association, trained a number of handy greyhounds.

A couple that come to mind back in the 1990's include Tusitu, who won a Lord Mayor's Cup at the Gabba.

Tusitala was another prolific Gabba winner.

Incarta Man won many races in the early days of racing at Albion Park.

From the greyhound family, our condolences go out to Jeff's wife Lillian and family.

Best bet

Ipswich races today with a 10 event program. Note with the predicted temperature of 41 degrees today the race meeting has been pushed back from the normal twilight slot to an evening meeting starting at 7.01pm.

Best Bet on the card is Race 6 Box 5 Fernando Bee for trainer John Hill. Fernando Bee is looking for three on the bounce at the track.
