Ash, Ali continue to do our city proud

THE best female tennis player in Australia is Ipswich's Ash Barty and she is doing our great city proud with superb performances this year.

Barty was in great form recently where she won her third career title defeating her Chinese opponent to raise the WTA Elite Trophy.

Barty has put in the hard work and the results have followed with her ranking now sitting at a high 15.

To put this more in to perspective, she was ranked no 325 in the world two years ago.

Barty has her sights set on entering the top 10 and I am sure with her grit and determination, the 22-year-old can achieve this.

One thing is for sure: The whole city is behind Barty and will be following her every tournament in 2019.

Golden Boot winners

THE Golden Boot for rugby league's best male and female players have been presented with an Australian and Englishman walking away with their respective top gong.

On the male side, Australia had James Tedesco as a contender but was beaten by a newcomer in English winger Tommy Makinson. He must be one hell of a player as his name is not one known to many supporters in Australia.

While we lost out on the male award, we were successful on the female side.

Australian, NSW and Roosters centre Isabelle Kelly was a worthy winner of this award with some great performances throughout the year.

Ipswich's Ali Brigginshaw was also in the top four for this prestige award after having a super season.

Like Ash Barty, Ali is another local product doing our city proud.

Cup milestone

THE Melbourne Cup has been run and won with the spoils going overseas.

The strong Godolphin stable have been trying to win our great race for years and have finally achieved success with their horse Cross Counter. It's was an overseas horse but the jockey was Australian with Kerrin McEvoy winning his third Cup.

I hope everyone had a great day and filled their wallets up.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week: I could not go past out latest Hornets batting hero in Levi Thomson-Matthews. Anybody that can hit a double century in hot conditions must be seeing the cricket ball like a watermelon and have a steely determination.

Villain of the week: George Burgess, what were you thinking having your hands near a player's eyes. Feel lucky you only got four weeks.

Did you know: Only two Australian bowlers have ever taken seven wickets in a one-day international. They are Glenn McGrath (7/15) and Andy Bichel (7/20).

Bomber's best: The Sydney Kings and Melbourne United both saluted last week so I will stick with the NBL where I like Melbourne United again and Adelaide to both win.
