POLICE are appealing to motorists who might have witnessed an incident at Haigslea where a woman fell from a moving vehicle to come forward.

UPDATE: Police are appealing to motorists who might have witnessed an incident at Haigslea where a woman fell from a moving vehicle to come forward.

Officers patrolling the Warrego Hwy on Thursday night came across the incident near the intersection of Schultz Rd and stopped to investigate.

They found a woman, 54, sitting in the gutter after what appeared to be a fall from a vehicle.

Ambulance officers treated the woman at the scene however her condition deteriorated and she died about 30 minutes later.

Ipswich district duty officer Senior Sergeant Robbie Goodger said the woman spoke with officers before she passed away.

But he would not reveal what was said between the woman and the officers.

"The forensic crash unit and scenes of crime are still investigating the why the woman fell from the vehicle and they will continue over the weekend and into next week," he said. "At this point in time it is too early to say why she fell from the vehicle."

Senior Sergeant Goodger said the male driver, 58, was assisting police with their investigations.

He said the driver had given his version of events but would no elaborate whether investigators are treating the woman's death as suspicious.

"We have physical evidence at the scene which we will be looking at," he said. "A post mortem will be conducted next week and we are awaiting those results."

Senior Sergeant Goodger said the man and woman were known to each other but said they were not in a relationship.

It is understood the woman lives in the Haigslea area but her identity has not been released.

EARLIER: Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred at Haigslea near Ipswich last night where a woman has lost her life.

The incident occurred around 8.40pm at the intersection of Schultz Road and the Warrego Highway.

Police patrolling in the area located a woman on the side of the road who indicated that she had been a passenger in a vehicle and had sustained a head injury after jumping from a moving vehicle.

The 54-year-old woman was treated by ambulance officers at the scene however her condition deteriorated and she died at the scene.

The 58-year-old male driver of the vehicle stopped the car and gave assistance to the woman.

The Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations into the incident.

There is no further information at this time.
