A southeast Queensland tradie has faced court for a “humiliating” rape, which he committed while on parole for multiple counts of strangulation.

Manly concreter Adam Lee Mason, 34, pleaded guilty on April 10 to one count of rape.

The court heard he had raped a woman some years ago while on parole.

Crown prosecutor Alice Pinkerton said Mason pushed the woman against a wall and started unbuttoning his pants.

He made derogatory and humiliating comments including “we’ll see how filthy you are”, the court heard.

Ms Pinkerton said the woman pleaded with Mason to stop, but he digitally raped her.

Judge Benedict Power noted Mason later admitted it was a “putrid thing to do”.

“This would have been a frightening and humiliating thing to have occurred,” Judge Power said.

The court heard police issued a warrant in the days after the incident but Mason “fled from justice” for more than a year before he was arrested and charged.

Ms Pinkerton read out the victim’s impact statement to the court.

“Prior to (the rape) I innately believed the world and the people in it were good,” Ms Pinkerton read.

“When I look at men now, all I see is their physicality.

“All I can think about is that they are bigger than me and stronger than me and that any moment, should they choose, they could overpower me.

“I am anxious and on edge performing simple daily tasks outside of the home.”

Ms Pinkerton said Mason had a significant criminal history.

“Previous terms of community based orders and actual imprisonment have failed to deter him,” she said.

Mason’s history included multiple offences of strangulation, along with convictions for burglary and using a carriage service to make a threat to kill.

He had been on parole at the time of the rape for two counts of strangulation.

The using a carriage service offence occurred while he was at large but involved a different victim.

Mason would still be serving cumulative sentences for those offences until April 13 this year.

His lawyer, Steve Kissick, told the court Mason had been working in concreting at Manly while he was at large.

He said Mason had a difficult upbringing and a history of schizophrenia and drug-induced psychosis.

Mr Kissick said his client was not medicated at the time of the rape but was now on antipsychotic medication.

Mason was sentenced to three years and three months in jail, with immediate parole eligibility.

Judge Power noted he did not expect Mason to be released “any time soon”.

However, the immediate eligibility would give him priority to start applying for rehabilitation programs.

He took into account the significant term Mason had spent in custody since his arrest for the strangulation charge, but did not declare it as time served for the rape.
