Ellen Grove’s Dylan Evan pleads guilty to cable theft

A father and cancer patient has faced court for sneaky acts involving cable wire and alcohol.

A cancer survivor was sentenced for stealing an electric cable at a Brisbane carpark.

Dylan Lee Evans, 41, pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing on Monday, June 24, at Ipswich Magistrates Court.

The court heard the Ellen Grove dad stole an electrical cable from a vehicle in a Wacol carpark on January 15, which was valued at $323.

His actions were captured by CCTV.

The court also heard that he stole five bottles of alcohol from a BWS bottle shop in Forest Lake without any attempt of paying on February 18, costing the business a loss of $328.4.

His offence was again identified with CCTV assistance.

The court heard that he committed the two offences while on parole.

The court was told he was concerned about how much he has left with his four children and five grandchildren.

Magistrate Robert Walker said the offences were of dishonesty.

“The objective seriousness of them lies in the fact that it’s simply unacceptable to take things that belong to others,” he said.

“Stealing is a prevalent offence and I recognise the multiple negative impacts it has upon the victims in the community.”

But he regarded Mr Evans’ mitigation as his suffering from testicular cancer.

“You recognise your time is really limited and you want to be a better father and grandfather to your children,” he said.

Magistrate Walker sentenced the defendant to two month imprisonment, suspended for nine months.
