A young Ipswich man accused of attempting to kill an unborn baby has spent his 21st birthday behind bars awaiting his trial.

Wulkuraka man Jesse Charles Hallett, 21, was charged last September with assault occasioning bodily harm, attempted unlawful assault of a pregnant female, written threats to murder, stalking, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The unlawful use charge was later dropped, and Mr Hallett was acquitted for that charge.

On March 10, 2023, Mr Hallett was committed to trial for the remaining offences.

It is alleged Mr Hallett had wanted his on-again-off-again pregnant partner to get an abortion – and took matters into his own hands when she refused.

Mr Hallett is alleged to have punched the woman’s pregnant belly and pushed her on September 15, 2022.

A police spokesman confirmed at the time that the woman’s eight-week-old unborn child appeared to be okay.

It is further alleged he threatened to “blow her head” off with a shotgun over Snapchat on August 27, and stalked her from August 26 to September 15, 2022.

Mr Hallett was denied bail last September, and appeared via video link at his committal today, March 10.

Crown prosecutor Shakirra Bassett presented a list of eight witnesses, including the alleged victim, whose evidence would be admitted to trial.

Defence lawyer Bradley Munt said they accepted the prosecution had enough basis for a prima facie case against his client.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella told Mr Hallett he was formally charged, and asked if he wanted to say anything or enter a plea.

Mr Hallett asked to speak to his lawyer to consider this. After discussing the matter privately for some time, court resumed and Hallett simply replied “no, Your Honour”.

He will remain in custody for a trial at Ipswich District Court on a later date.
