A BRONCOS player was nabbed by police stopped at a red light scrolling through his mobile phone.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Caldwell told an Ipswich court Payne Luckee Haas had both hands on the mobile phone and his head was looking down when a police car pulled up beside him.
A check revealed his Learner licence was suspended at the time. His illegal phone fidget and licence issue has now cost him more than $10,000.
Haas, 20, from Redbank Plains, pleaded guilty in Ipswich Magistrates Court to driving when unlicensed due to demerit point suspension on March 1 and illegally using a mobile phone.
Sgt Caldwell said Haas told police he was stopped at the red lights when scrolling through the phone.
Officers on patrol saw his white Land Rover Freelander at 12.40pm in Redbank Plains and he was intercepted on School Road. Haas told the officers he drove as he needed to get to footy training.
The defence lawyer for Haas said the Bronco's player did have football training that evening and his defacto partner usually drove him.
The lawyer said Haas was contracted to the Brisbane Broncos and the club had imposed a hefty $10,000 fine after he faced an integrity hearing.
He was also eligible to apply for a provisional licence.
However Magistrate Donna MacCallum noted Haas would be off the road for a while. She disqualified his Learner licence for six months and fined him $500.
