A man is at risk of having his hand amputated after he was seriously injured in an alleged machete attack on Saturday night.

Joshua Mark Busby, 29, and Nicholas Sydney, Pukallus, 38, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday charged over the alleged attack.

Both were charged with grievous bodily harm, enter premises and commit an indictable offence and wilful damage.

A man suffered a serious injury to his wrist on Saturday night after the two men allegedly arrived at his One Mile home and a disturbance broke out.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said the allegations were “serious” and involved a group of men attending the Shine Street home while armed including with a machete

The court heard Mr Pukallus was alleged to have been brandishing the machete.

An altercation broke out at the house and spilt out in the street in view of members of the public.

Mr Kinsella said the alleged victim was being assessed but was in a serious condition, facing the possibility of needing his hand amputated.

The court heard the alleged victim’s 11-year-old son was also present.

Mr Busby and Mr Pukallus were arrested after Polair tracked them down in Brassall shortly after the alleged attack.

Duty lawyer Erin Dwan represented Mr Pukallus, who made a bail application on Monday.

The court heard the bail application was opposed by police and that Mr Pukallus was on probation at the time of the alleged offending.

Ms Dwan said Mr Pukallus had mental health issues including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

She said there was “no escaping” that the allegations against Mr Pukallus were serious but said nothing in his history suggested he would not be able to comply with bail conditions.

She said he was in receipt of a disability support pension and would live in Bundamba with his parents if granted bail.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough appeared for Mr Busby who also made a bail application, which was opposed by police.

Mr Fairclough said Mr Busby said he was at the scene of the alleged offence but did not participate in any physical altercation.

He said Mr Busby also received a minor injury during the alleged attack.

The court heard Mr Busby, who was on bail for other matters at the time of his arrest, lived in Brassall and worked for a plastics factory.

Mr Kinsella said both men were an unacceptable risk and denied their bail applications.

The matters were adjourned to December for committal mention.

A 15-year-old boy was also arrested in relation to the incident and was due to appear in Ipswich Children’s Court.
