MP Margie Nightingale petitions Lord Mayor to fix Inala intersection

A petition to fix a dangerous intersection in Brisbane’s southwest is gaining traction, with a state MP calling on the Lord Mayor to “fix it”.

The state MP for Inala in Brisbane’s southwest has called upon the Lord Mayor to fix a dangerous intersection in her electorate, saying there have been “too many near misses and locals are risking their lives”.

Margie Nightingale, who won former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s seat in the March by-election, has started a petition to fix a dangerous intersection in Inala.

Nightingale said the busy intersection at Pine Rd, Azalea St and Archerfield Rd in Inala has been a black spot for years, with many serious accidents and near misses.

“Local residents have been urging Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner for years and in the recent local government elections he and his representative committed to fixing this dangerous council intersection,” Ms Nightingale said.

“Now is the time for the Lord Mayor to deliver. The community here cannot wait for progress any longer.

“For far too long, Inala locals have risked their lives at this intersection and they’ve been crying out for this to be fixed”.

Ms Nightingale made the safety of the intersection a key promise in her election campaign, pledging that she “will work tirelessly every day to ensure that her community received the strong representation it deserved”.

She took to social media to spread awareness of her petition, with most commenters agreeing that the intersection had been dangerous for years.

However one commenter blamed the behaviour of motorists, not the intersection’s design.

“The intersection is perfectly fine, it’s the drivers who are the problem,” Brett Waanders posted.

“Stop trying to waste our tax paying money on upgrades that have been deemed for years not necessary”.

Many disagreed, saying the intersection had been a problem for years and an easy solution was to install a roundabout.

Isabel Horsfall posted: “About time someone talked about this intersection. I try to avoid it as it’s so bad”.

Eric Yun said: “This intersection is just too dangerous. The Lord Mayor needs to fix this now. Thanks Margie for speaking up.’’

Rachel Rain said they were involved in an accident at the intersection on the weekend.

“Stop blaming and political point scoring and just fix it and improve pedestrian access in Richlands,” she posted.

Ms Nightingale said she had heard from “countless” residents who wanted the intersection fixed.

“Every day, residents driving home or driving to work have needlessly risked their lives using this intersection,” she said.

“Just over a week ago, we saw another serious crash at this intersection which resulted in a truck rolling over.

“With the 2024/25 Brisbane City Council budget due to be handed down on June 12, now is the time for the Lord Mayor to make it right and fix this intersection”.

Brisbane City Council’s Infrastructure Chair Andrew Wines said the council had not received the petition to upgrade the intersection, but acknowledged it was a commitment made by the Lord Mayor during his re-election campaign in March.

“Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and his representative Kylie Gates committed to upgrading this intersection during the recent Council election and it’s great the local MP is now supporting the project,” Cr Wines said.

“The Schrinner Council looks forward to working with the State Government to deliver this important project to help keep Brisbane moving”.
