The identities of the two men allegedly involved in a brutal attack at Ipswich that left one fighting for his life have been revealed.
Peniata Ben Tasi, 20, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court via video link from custody on Wednesday March 2, charged with committing acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm or transmit serious disease.
He is pleading not guilty to the alleged crime.
Tasi of Redbank Plains allegedly attacked Camira man William McLean, 33, at Wilson Dr, Camira about 11am on Tuesday March 1, leaving him with life-threatening head injuries.
A Queensland Police spokesman said police will allege Tasi attacked a man who was known to him – Mr McLean – causing significant head injuries before fleeing.
“The injured man underwent surgery overnight and remains in a critical condition at the Princess Alexandra Hospital,” the spokesman said on Wednesday.
A Princess Alexandra Hospital spokeswoman has since confirmed Mr McLean is in a stable condition.
The police spokesman said Tasi was found by Ipswich detectives on Tuesday night and charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.
“An Investigation Centre has been established at Yamanto Police Station and a crime scene is ongoing in Wilson [Drive],” he said on Wednesday.
Police urged anyone with information, including anyone who witnessed the incident or who was in the area at the time with dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
In court on Wednesday, defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough asked Magistrate Kathleen Payne for an adjournment so that he could confer with his client and Tasi’s legal aid application could be processed.
The matter was adjourned to Wednesday March 9 for mention.
Tasi will remain in custody and appear again via video link.
