An Ipswich teenager has been granted bail in the Supreme Court despite allegations he confessed on CCTV to stabbing a man.

Kennedy Wani, 19, allegedly stabbed a man in the chest at Goodna on March 10, 2024.

Paramedics had attended the Caldwell Street scene around 10pm and transported a 38-year-old to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The Brisbane Supreme Court heard during Wani’s bail application on Friday how the victim alleged Wani had first told him “I’m going to kill you” while holding a knife.

It would further be alleged Wani was captured on CCTV later that night telling another person that he’d stabbed someone, the court heard.

Wani, 18 at the time, was arrested and charged following the incident with malicious act with intent.

Barrister Dan Boddice said the defence had made a submission to prosecution pushing for that charge to be downgraded to the lesser charge of wounding.

He said his client, who had already spent 471 days in pre-sentence custody, would have already served his sentence if the charge were downgraded.

Mr Boddice also noted a key witness, who allegedly saw the stabbing take place, could not be located and had not yet given a formal statement.

He said they were still waiting on further information surrounding a predicating incident, in which he said the defendant and victim allegedly engaged in a consensual fight.

Mr Boddice said his client would consent to wearing an electronic monitoring device and a condition not to use drugs.

There was no allegation Wani had been on drugs at the time, he noted.

Judge Smith said the case for the malicious act was “pretty strong”.

But he accepted, given Wani’s age and lack of criminal history, that he was approaching the amount of time in custody he would have to serve if convicted.

Wani was granted bail under conditions including wearing an electronic monitoring device and not using drugs.
