A top Ipswich school has revealed its hopes to celebrate its 25th anniversary next year with the start of construction on a flash new sporting centre.

Since its opening in 1998, The Springfield Anglican College has grown to accommodate more than 1,100 students from kindergarten to year 12, across two campuses.

Now, the school looks to expand further with the construction of a new sports centre – the last stage in the school’s 2018-2022 Master Plan.

The school submitted a development proposal over the weekend for an extension to build a multipurpose sporting complex and learning facility, along with additional parking.

The planning report, prepared by Landpartners, said the proposed complex would include learning rooms and an entry foyer on the upper lever, and a main space to accommodate “a range of court based sporting activities, as well as a stage and back of house area providing toilets, change rooms and storage”.

The 2623 sqm design also includes additional parking in an undercroft area, with a total 180 spaces — including one PWD space.

A spokesperson for The Springfield Anglican College the sports centre would include two indoor sports courts, three additional classrooms, and could also double as an event space for assemblies and awards ceremonies.

“The college has enjoyed strong enrolment growth in recent years and the new sports centre will assist the college in accommodating that growth,” they said.

The spokesperson said the planning for the complex is almost at the end of its design phase, and that the school hoped to start construction next year, coinciding with the school’s 25th anniversary.

The planning report indicated the complex would be located within an undeveloped portion of the school’s development site, adjacent to the Springfield Greenbank Arterial frontage.

School principal Steven Morris said “the new facility represents an investment in our students’ health and wellbeing, as well as teaching and learning opportunities”.

“Participation in school sports is a vital part of a holistic education. The construction of the sports centre will help to break down barriers to participation and help to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for our students,” he said.

“I am confident the new building will be put to great use by current and future students at The Springfield Anglican College and many others in our community.”

The development approval application is currently in the confirmation period and awaiting council approval.
