In just more than a week, the Ipswich community has already raised more than half of a $10,000 goal to support a beloved local footy coach in his “enormous hour of need”.
Ipswich Knights soccer coach, Craig McKeown, was hospitalised two weeks ago after an “unfortunate accident” resulting in a “significant” leg injury.
The Ipswich Knights community rallied to his aid, and created a GoFundMe soon after, which has already raised almost $5,590.
The fundraiser’s organiser Dan Burnell, said the funds were going to a pillar family in their sporting community.
“There won’t be too many people connected to our great football club, Ipswich Knights FC, who won’t be familiar with the names Craig and Amy McKeown”.
“Craig commits endless hours, and makes monumental sacrifices, to ensure our junior footballers have the resources, skills and platform they need to love the game like he does … he’s one of those guys who moves huge mountains for the club behind the scenes,” he said.
“He wears a hundred club hats. He has never refused an opportunity to help. And he does it all without expectation of public acknowledgment or accolade.”
At the time of the fundraiser’s creation, Mr Burnell said Mr Mckeon was undergoing multiple surgeries, but was stable condition.
“In the days ahead, Craig will meet the recovery ward, and with that comes a very, very long road ahead,” said Mr Burnell.
He said the GoFundMe was set up to help Craig get back on his feet “both figuratively and literally”, while he and his family battled through this “enormous hour of need”.
“He promises to return to the club as soon as he can, though please understand if that can’t happen for some time.”
The GoFundMe is currently still active, and donations can be made here.
