Winter Trees on Mary another great success and a credit to Gympie community

‘Congratulations to all involved, especially that champion of all things Mary Street, Tony Goodman.’

Winter Trees on Mary 2021

Letter to the Editor

I attended the Winter Trees on Mary Festival last Wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Many community events have been cancelled because of the lingering presence of Covid-19, so it was good to see this annual event go ahead. And to see it quite well supported.

The winter certainly took the invitation at its word and turned on a chilly evening. This may have impacted the community turn-out —a bit smaller than on some other occasions.
But there was a respectable crowd and it was a happy one. The clip-clop of the coach horses was missing, as were the looks of delight on the faces of the two-legged kids in the Animal Nursery. Covid casualties I suppose.
Still there was plenty of entertainment for everyone — train rides and a jumping castle for the kids,an interesting variety of street and cafe foods, wine tasting and late- night shopping.
And the street was “alive with the sound of music”. I particularly enjoyed a performance by a James Nash choir on the main stage, listening to a young lady, Alice Benfer, performing outside Bella Casa and an energetic chap called Simon belting out pop and gospel near the popular Langos stall. He had the chef bopping along with him.
As usual, the Ukelele Band, who might be Gympie’s happiest people, spread their happiness around with some all-time favourites.
The Winter Trees were warmly attired - their smart appearance a credit to the schools and community organisations who must have dedicated many hours to having them looking their winter best.
The Historical Car Society made its customary contribution to the spectacle of the evening, displaying their cherished and immaculately preserved vintage models.
But the best part of the event, as usual, was seeing the Gympie community out enjoying the occasion and catching up with friends and acquaintances probably not seen since the Show.
These events don’t happen without a great deal of effort and organisation.
Congratulations to all involved, especially that champion of all things Mary Street, Tony Goodman.
Merv Welch, Gympie
