A popular section of the Mary River crossing will be fenced off by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries later this year to prevent vehicle access and stop further damage to the “trashed” riverbank.
The DAF recently announced it would construct a fence to cut off access from the Mary Valley Research Facility to the adjacent Mary River at Traveston Crossing.
“This is necessary to stop further damage from 4WD vehicles to vegetation and native wildlife,” a DAF spokesperson said.
“A portion of the fence will be made of steel posts and rails to deter access.
“There will also be signage and a surveillance camera installed to monitor the area.
“The Department is consulting with stakeholders about the changes which are anticipated to be in place later this year.”

“Traveston crossing is an area that’s being really trashed,” Mr Mackay told the ABC.
“A lot of the locals who used to love to go down there for a swim now don't like to do it because they say there’s bikes driving around and cars driving around and there’s broken glass.”
