More police to cope with crime in parts of the Gympie region and a multi-purpose sports facility were two of the top things on the Gympie region wishlist ahead of Tuesday’s state budget.

The Cooloola Coast needs a higher police presence to deal with its growing issues and population, Gympie MP Tony Perrett said ahead of Tuesday’s state budget.

Mr Perrett said in revealing his budget wishlist for the Gympie region, the current Rainbow Beach “police beat” was not able to deal with all the issues and the population growth, and a police station was needed, particularly when the centre’s population swells by thousands on weekends and school holidays.

Road access to the Cooloola Coast also needed improvement, and funding needed to be allocated for passing lanes on the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach Roads.

It was a similar story in the Mary Valley, he said, where the Imbil police station was in need of an upgrade and more officers, and the Mary Valley Highway needed to be made safer for motorists.

Borumba Dam also needed to be raised to ensure water security for the region into the future, an ambulance station was needed at Glenwood, and Gympie itself needed funding for more housing, a new fire station and a multi-purpose facility.

The State Government also needed to invest more in rural education and ag technology, particularly in light of its controversial decision to close down Queensland’s Ag colleges, he said.
