Tin Can Bay Rd to get $700k safety upgrade
One of the region’s busiest and most dangerous roads is getting a touch of love from the state government in the name of safety.

One of Gympie’s most dangerous roads is getting an overhaul by way of a $700,000 safety upgrade designed to widen the gap between traffic.
Tin Can Bay Rd’s centre line is being widened between Lillis Rd in Gympie and Dugong St in Tin Can Bay, opposite the town’s Country Club.
A 13km-long tactile audio line will also be installed along the stretch of road, south of Dugong St.
The road has been a subject of controversy in the region.
Rainbow Beach businessman Tony Stewart is petitioning the state government for safety fixes along the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach roads.
Mr Stewart said the behaviour of drivers on the 48km stretch to Dugong St was “absolutely disgusting”.
He has called on the state government to install more pullover bays and overtaking lanes to improve safety.
From 2001-2018 there were 13 fatal crashes on Tin Can Bay Rd, claiming 14 lives.
It was the highest fatality rate in the region behind only the Bruce Highway.
The work on Tin Can Bay Rd has started now and is expected to be completed by mid-September.
Transport and Main Roads has allocated $300,000 over the next two financial years (2021-22 to 2023-24) to investigate additional overtaking opportunities on Tin Can Bay Road.
Future funding of detailed design and construction would be subject to competing statewide priorities.
