‘The sooner the beach is closed to drivers, campers the better’

LETTER: A Gympie region resident has called out beach driving as ‘dangerous, unpleasant and unnecessary’, saying it should either be banned or strictly policed.

Letter to the Editor about the dangers of beach driving:

As Liz Stubbs says (in this article HERE) it is not just birds but an entire ecosystem that is being affected.

If I endangered wildlife around my house I could be fined up to $80,000, or spend time in jail. Why is it okay and no penalties on the beach?

On Inskip it is down right dangerous, unpleasant and unnecessary. To get to the barge there only needs to be one track, not up and down the entire east side. Rubbish is left by lazy people who really should and could walk the short distances from tarmac road to beach.

Being on the beach is a privilege not some people’s god given right.

It is dangerous for dog walkers and children. I have witnessed almost being run over as some drivers are intent on getting from one end to the other and you have to get out of their way.

The sooner the beach is closed to drivers/campers the better. There is no need for it and nature is so
precious. We should be looking after it not destroying it.

If not closed then very, very strict and much more expensive to go there, many more consequences for inappropriate behaviour and designated campsites that you have to prove you left clean before you can leave.

Look back at some of your articles on rubbish left behind. Name, shame perpetrators and ban them from every national park and free camping in Australia.
