Speed reduction at intersection of Tin Can Bay Rd and Bayside Rd

A significant speed reduction at a notoriously dangerous coastal intersection is just the start, with a $2.8million project expected to dramatically improve traffic safety there later this year.

The speed limit at the Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Road intersection is set to drop from 80km/h to 60km/h starting mid-August 2024.

Approved by the Speed Management Committee, this early speed reduction aims to boost safety before construction of a new roundabout begins, a statement released by the Department of Transport and Main Roads yesterday said.

“Adopting the new speed limit in advance allows drivers to become familiar with driving slower, increasing safety even before the construction work starts,” the statement said.

“TMR is taking a two-staged approach to enhance safety of Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Road at the intersection, Tin Can Bay.

“The first stage involves reducing the speed limit before upgrades commence late 2024 - early 2025.

“From mid-August 2024, the speed limit will be lowered from 80km/h to 60km/h on both Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Road approaching the intersection. This change, weather and conditions permitting, will give motorists time to adjust before construction begins.

“Introducing the reduced speed limit ahead of the new roundabout’s construction will improve safety in the interim.

“The new speed limit has been endorsed by the local Speed Management Committee, which includes representatives from TMR, local government, and Queensland Police.

“The detailed design for the roundabout is complete and fully funded by the Queensland Government, with $2.8 million allocated for this project under the Safer Roads Sooner Program, this program is a state-funded minor capital works initiative aimed at improving the safety of the state-controlled road network.

TMR regional director, Southern Queensland Bill Lansbury said the community had been calling for better safety at the the intersection but that TMR could not build a new roundabout overnight.

“That’s why we’re taking steps to improve safety now by reducing the speed limit,” he said.

“I urge all motorists to look out for the new speed signs and be aware of the changed speed limit on both Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Road.

“I also want to remind motorists to always drive to the conditions and reduce their speed in wet weather or other adverse conditions.”
