Show Society and army of volunteers met the challenges and overcame them

Letter to the Editor

What a triumph over adversity— the 2021 Gympie Show.

Sure, COVID restrictions were obvious, cattle numbers were down and the Show got off to a fairly quiet start on Thursday. But by evening the attendance was substantial, and the crowd on Friday (People’s Day) must have been close to a record. Thankfully, on all three days the weather was perfect Autumn.
The Pavilion showcased the wealth of local talent and creativity, there was the usual array of showtime food, and Sideshow Alley, especially at night, was a brilliant spectacle.

Speaking of which, the Tom Grady-sponsored fireworks on the three nights of the Show were, like some of the new rides in Sideshow Alley, breathtaking!
As usual, the woodchopping was a highly competitive display of fitness and skill.
In the main ring the State Show Jumping Titles assured brilliant performances, and in the second arena there was keen competition in the extensive program of equestrian events. The latter was especially obvious on Saturday, with hundreds of juvenile and junior riders competing in the biggest program of novelty events and show jumping that I have seen on a final day.

And the rodeo took the action well into Saturday night.
But the real triumph this year was that the Show actually went ahead, when it might easily have been abandoned as “just too hard”.
For this, a huge vote of thanks is due to the Gympie Show Society who, with the assistance of an army of volunteers, met the major challenges and overcame them to ensure that the Show would go on.

Their efforts deserved all the community support they received.
