Timothy James St John charged with stealing Audi SUV, punching police

A 36-year-old man accused of stealing a new Audi from outside a business in Blight St is facing 15 charges, including allegedly assaulting the police officers who tried to arrest him.

A 36-year-old man from Fisherman’s Pocket is facing more than a dozen charges after allegedly punching a police officer in the head while trying to flee arrest over a stolen Audi SUV.

Mr St. John’s case was mentioned in Gympie Magistrate’s court on Monday and his matter was adjourned to July 11, 2022. He did not apply for bail.

Police said in a released statement the SUV was stolen from outside a business on Bligh St in Gympie on Friday, June 10, between 12.30pm and 1.20pm.

A witness reported seeing a man wearing a black jumper in the area shortly before the car was stolen.

The next day police received several reports of the car still being driven in the Gympie area.

Police alleged they were able to identify the man, Timothy James St John, after he was caught on CCTV driving the SUV.

In their statement police said officers patrolling Meadows Lane at Chatsworth, about 5km northwest of Gympie. found Mr St John travelling with another man in a separate vehicle.

The stolen car was found in bushland not far away.

Police have alleged Mr St John tried to flee arrest, running towards the SUV.

Officers pursued him, they said, leading to a struggle in which he allegedly punched one of the officers in the head.

Mr St John, from Fisherman’s Pocket, has been charged with unlawful use of motor vehicles, aircraft or vessels, serious assault with intent to commit crime or resist arrest, obstruct police officer, driving of motor vehicle without a driver‘s licence disqualified by court order type two vehicle related offence, enter premises and commit indictable offence by break, six charges of enter premises and commit indictable offence, enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence, two charges of unlawful possession of motor vehicles, aircraft or vessels with intent to deprive and attempted stealing.

His bail has been refused and he will return to Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday.
