A 48-year-old Curra cleaner is on probation after stalking his ex across a week-long period after she broke up with him on Facebook.

Jason Noel Jones pleaded guilty to the crime, a domestic violence offence, over his contact with his victim from October 26, 2023 to November 1, 2023.

During this time Jones phoned and texted her multiple times, including sending a threatening message saying “I will kill him”.

On another occasion he sent his victim a message saying “found you” after she moved house.

Jones’s lawyer told the court her client, who was on the verge of finishing a mechanic’s apprenticeship and worked as a cleaner, was away from his victim when the relationship ended.

He learned of it on Facebook when she changed her relationship status to single.

A number of the calls were about her cat, which had been left in his care during the break-up, the court was told.

The “found you” message was sent after Jones saw his victim driving her car in the city, his lawyer said, and not because he had tracked her to her new home.

Jones, who completed up to Year 10 at school, “did not comprehend” how she would receive the message, she told the court.

Magistrate Bevan Hughes called Jones’ actions “disconcerting, distressing and disturbing”.

It had also caused pain “to someone you claim to have cared about”.

“When it’s over, it’s over,” Mr Hughes said.

“You are allowed to feel hurt... what you’re not allowed to do is behave in a way towards (her), constantly calling them, abusing them... what you’re doing is placing your own feelings... above those of the other person.

“This behaviour would never bring the person back to you.”

Jones, whose criminal history was “very limited”, was placed on two years’ probation with no conviction recorded.
