Jailed Gympie man asks magistrate if he will 'get much time'
A young Gympie man has amused a courtroom after asking the magistrate whether he would “get much time” for his charges if he pleaded guilty.
A young Gympie man with a criminal history triggered some laughs from the court gallery when he asked the magistrate on Monday if he would “get much time” if found guilty, and if he had to “do any paperwork” to get legal representation.
Noah Kevin Kipling, 20, appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court from custody on several drug charges, and a stealing after previous conviction charge.
He has not formally entered any pleas.
He was jailed after a return to prison warrant was issued over unrelated matters, and had been behind bars before for property offences, the court heard.
Kipling initially wanted to represent himself to “get it done and deal with it” that day, and was informed that would be not possible, but he could seek legal advice.
“Do I have to do any paperwork?” he asked.
After finding out he only needed to sign a form, he agreed to progress a legal aid application, and his intent to plead guilty was noted by magistrate Bevan Hughes.
“Do you reckon I’ll get much time at all, or not,” the 20-year-old then asked Mr Hughes.
“I reckon I’ll let you know after I sentence you,” Mr Hughes said.
Several in the public gallery were heard laughing.
Kipling was remanded in custody, with his next court appearance set for January 6.
