Australia's growing drug crisis

A 21-year-old meth addict sourced drugs for a known dealer looking to purchase methamphetamine from her so she could feed her own growing addiction, a court has heard.

There were tears in Gympie District Court on Thursday as Chantslea Sue Curran, 21, was sentenced for eight counts of supplying methamphetamine.

She pleaded guilty to all charges.

Curran was supported by three people in the public gallery, who wiped away tears during her appearance.

The court heard Curran, who had an extensive criminal history, was caught supplying meth to two different people, including a drug dealer.

The crimes were revealed through a series of messages from the phones of two different people.

Police prosecutor Alex Stark told the court the drug dealer Curran would source meth for claimed he was being “ripped off” when he could not afford to make two purchases.

In messages to the second person, Mr Stark said Curran had bartered over a Calvin Klein jacket.

He said Curran’s supplying of meth was not for commercial use.

Defence lawyer Simone Bain teared up at the bar table while telling the court of her client’s troubled past, and her desperate attempts to turn her life around.

Ms Bain said Curran began using meth in social settings when she was 17, but it quickly escalated to an addiction.

She said the charges in Gympie District Court stemmed from an urge to “feed her addiction”.

However, she said Curran wanted to thank the court for its intervention, and cited her time in prison as the beginning of turning her life around.

“She never wants to go back to jail … she genuinely wants to succeed,” Ms Bain said.

Judge Amanda McDonnell then asked Curran if she would like to add to her lawyer’s comments, to which she said she “needed” the time behind bars.

“I’m ready to move on,” she said.

Judge McDonnell sentenced Curran to 12 months behind bars, wholly suspended for two and a half years.
