A 30-year-old man’s lie to police in an attempt to cover-up his partner’s ties to the torching of an Audi involved in an alleged Brisbane murder in 2022 has landed him behind bars.
Brent Michael Haynes pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court to attempting to pervert the course of justice over the October 2022 at Dutton Park which destroyed 11 vehicles including an Audi A3 sedan, published remarks from recent sentencing have revealed.
The Audi was linked to the alleged murder of 38-year-old Timothy Van Vo in the front yard of a Corinda home in the early hours of October 4, 2022.
Mr Van Vo had been sitting in his car outside a friend’s home when he was allegedly ambushed by a group of people at 3.30am and shot in the chest at close range.
Haynes, who previously lived in Gympie and was on a suspended sentence imposed by Gympie Magistrates Court at the time, is not accused of any involvement in Mr Van Vo’s alleged murder.
Judge Jennifer Rosengren said in her sentencing remarks Haynes had initially been tied to the arson of the cars when police investigations linked the 30-year-old’s phone to the location of the fire and his fingerprint was found on a latex glove left at the scene.
On November 5, 2022 Haynes told police in an interview he was involved in the arson and stood as lookout and saw the car catch fire, the documents said.
“This was a lie,” Judge Rosengren said.
The court was told it was Haynes’ partner at the time who was involved in the arson, and she had since been sentenced.

Judge Rosengren said the 30-year-old’s lie came to light after police obtained telephone calls between Haynes and his father, and Haynes and his partner.
“You told your father in one 20 of the calls you had put your hand up for it as you did not want her to get in trouble and you confirmed this to your partner two days later,” Judge Rosengren said.
She also said Haynes had a “lengthy” criminal history which included an offence of assault occasioning bodily harm in which Haynes had struck another driver in the head with a gas strut also otherwise hit the man until he was unconscious.
In September 2021 Haynes pleaded guilty at Gympie Magistrates Court to receiving tainted property, possessing dangerous drugs, and failing to appear at court.
He was sentenced to six months’ jail, with the term suspended for 18 months.
Judge Rosengren said Haynes had lied to police while this suspended sentence was still in force.
She sentenced Haynes to one year’s jail, with parole eligibility from June 3, 2025.
