A Gold Coast tradie was busted hauling more than 1.5kg of marijuana up the Bruce Highway after someone tipped off police.

Brent Richard Allen, 33, of Ormeau, was pulled over near Gympie on October 17, 2023, shortly after the anonymous tip.

Officers found the weed stored in two garbage bags inside the car, Gympie District Court heard.

Allen first claimed the marijuana was for his own use before ultimately agreeing there was an unidentified commercial use planned for the drug, the court heard.

The prosecution was unable to put a dollar figure on the value of the marijuana Allen had been caught with.

Allen’s defence lawyer said his client had worked as a concreter but not since the charges were laid, and he was now living with family at Nanango.

His criminal history included a wilful damage offence in 2022.

The court heard Allen, a father-of-two who had split with their mother, had himself used marijuana to deal with depression.

Allen pleaded guilty to one count of possessing dangerous drugs in excess of 500g.

Judge Glen Cash sentenced Allen to one year’s jail, with immediate parole.
