Some of Queensland’s top artists will have riveting pieces “addressing social issues through the properties of paper itself” on show at the Gympie Regional Gallery until next month.

The ‘making paper / making art’ exhibition “celebrates and documents an emerging community of contemporary Queensland artists” and features the works of Grace Cuell, Ana Paula Estrada, Fiona Foley, Annique Goldenberg, Sidonie Hall-Jordan, Tim Mosely, JungHa Park, Pamela See and Karen Stone.

A Gympie Regional Council statement released this week said Cuell’s work addresses the exorbitant waste of resources, both human and material, involved in the fashion industry, while Foley calls to account the historical institutional abuse of Indigenous communities through Queensland legislation while working with linen and cotton plant fibres.

The council’s statement said Hall-Jordan tackles the complex relationship between ourselves and the bodies that we ‘occupy’ with a skin-like plant fibre, while Stone draws us into a contentious space, focusing on nostalgia, symbolism and the associated memories attached to home.

This exhibition is co-ordinated by Dr Tim Mosely, convener for the Print program at Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art.

The exhibiting artists are or were postgraduate students at QCA working with paper in the Print studios.

Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday.

The exhibition will be open until July 22.
