The sudden death of a 21-year-old Gympie man has prompted his devastated family to urge others who are struggling to speak up before it’s too late.
Levi Podetti died by suicide in May 2025, and two GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to help his family meet the costs of his funeral.
Levi’s younger sister has shared on social media the text messages she received from her brother before his tragic death, revealing their close bond and family struggles with mental health.
“Not only the s*** that we’ve been (through) us Podettis just don’t have very good mental health in general we’ll get (through) it you needa come stay with ya big brother and talk to me about it,” read one of the final texts from Levi.
Others hinted at his possible struggle with substances in the past.
“Love you lots I promise for you and for myself I won’t touch no drugs again and you can believe it when u see it but I’ll always be here for you your problems are mine too we’ll get (through) it together,” Levi texted his sister.
“We can’t live in the past. I promise I’m not on drugs come stay with me for even a night I get (paid) in 2, 3 days so we can go out for dinner or something love ya sis even if u hate me.”
Levi was evidently highly protective of his younger sister.
“If anyone tried to hurt u or do anything I’d be the first to make them (...) disappear,” he texted her.
“No other c*** would I help more (than) u I would kill c***s for you and u know it.”
Levi’s sister shared the hashtags “notweaktospeak” and “mentalhealthawareness” on her TikTok.
“I wish you could’ve known that we were here to support you if one person didn’t listen, speak to the next, we care,” Levi’s sister posted on TikTok.
“I love you so much I don’t know how I’m gonna do it without (you).
“I miss you so much my brother. You left us too soon, you had so much ahead of you if only you could’ve realised.
“I’m tryna keep strong for the family but it’s so hard.
“Miss you so much Levi. You had so much ahead of you nothing could’ve ever prepared me for what happened that day.
“I wish I could’ve helped you like you helped me. We were meant to keep growing up together.
“I feel like I let you down. I am so sorry Levi.
“I miss you so much I have so many questions that are going to remain unanswered because (no one) but you knew the answers.
“We are all so heartbroken and lost without you here. I’m sorry I wasn’t there as much as I could’ve been.
“I’m sorry I was a bad sister. I’m sorry for always arguing about going to school. I love you so much I wish you could’ve known.
“I miss you so much Levi a piece of my heart broke the day you left you were so loved by everyone I wish you were here, I love you.”
Levi’s mother Dianna Anderson shared the news of her son’s heartbreaking death on Facebook on May 23, and has received an outpouring of support from family and friends.
“(It’s) not weak to speak,” Ms Anderson said.
“If the first person doesn’t listen, keep talking and finding the person who can help, it’s important.”
“The side of suicide people don’t know. Your family is left wondering what they should have, could have done.
“Your family’s left trying to come up with $20,000 for a funeral that doesn’t include a headstone.
“Your family never gets to say goodbye.
“They talk to police, coroners, and so many people to try and make sense of what has happened.
“They try and let everyone who loved you know and try to support them even though
you are (dying) inside.
“All I want is my baby back to hug and love and protect. How does a mum go on!”
Mrs Anderson shared a link to a GoFundMe campaign for Levi’s family, organised by Charlotte Roberts, which as of Tuesday noon, June 3 had raised almost $9000.
“Help Lay Levi to Rest with Love and Dignity,” the page says.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating loss of Levi — a beloved son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin, and friend to so many. At just 21 years old, Levi’s life was tragically cut short when he took his own life.
“Levi was a kind and thoughtful soul who touched countless lives with his bright spirit and quiet strength.
“His absence leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
“As his family begins to navigate this unimaginable pain, we are reaching out for support to help cover the cost of Levi’s funeral and memorial services.
“Every contribution, no matter the size, will help us give Levi the peaceful and dignified farewell he deserves.
“If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing this page and holding Levi and our family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
“Thank you for your love, support, and compassion.”
Ms Roberts said donations would go towards covering the cost of Levi’s funeral and memorial service.
“His absence leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him,” the campaign page said.
“Your amazing son and my amazing big brother always looking down,” Levi’s sister posted on her mother’s Facebook.
“I know Dianna was the most loving and supportive mother,” Levi’s grandfather Peter Anderson wrote.
Others offered touching memories of the young man.
“Sorry for your loss lovely, Levi was a mate of mine and I hope you know he was so kind and him and Mia would always come to my rescue, and I wish I could’ve thanked him for that,” Isla Wimbus said.
“One step at a time Di. You get to each step in your own time, and you take care of yourself in the process,” Dianna’s friend Gaye Weeks wrote.
“Love you Baby and I am here for you always,” they said.
Ms Anderson has encouraged people to donate to the GoFundMe to help cover the financial cost of Levi’s funeral.
“I am not one to ask for help but I appreciate that people want to help, and to be honest we need the help so thank you!” she wrote.
