McGovern Developments’ plans for new Gympie retirement village

A Brisbane-based developer has unveiled plans to build a huge retirement village with an array of features including a theatre, bowling green, pickleball courts and pools.

McGovern Development have lodged an application to build a 153-lot over 50s retirement village only a few hundred metres from the historic Gympie station and Mary Valley Rattler.

Gympie’s retirees will have the chance to kick their heels up and spend their days in style if a proposed 153-lot retirement village is given the green light by Gympie Regional Council.

McGovern Developments has unveiled the plans to open the centre on 7.33ha of vacant land behind Tozer St, only a few hundred metres from the Mary Valley Rattler and historic Gympie station.

McGovern bought the land in January last year for $1.87m, CoreLogic RP Data records show.

Its desire to spend money on the project does not stop there, either.

Residents will be able to enjoy a bowls green, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, pickleball courts, gymnasium, theatre, library, games room, and stage and dining hall.

If approved, the retirement village would be built on and squeezed between Tom Grady’s Rural Merchandise Store at Tozer St, and the Gympie Aquatic Centre.

The units will each have two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, private terrace and lockup garage.

The sites will be between 200sq m and 399sq m, with 250sq m to 287sq m the most common size, the application says.

Houses border the land to the north and south, and Gympie’s Aquatic Centre sits to the southeast.

The Tom Grady Rural Merchandise Store at Tozer St is located at its western edge.

Entry to the village will be by Sorrel St which runs off Tozer Park Rd.

A traffic report lodged as part of the application says extra traffic from the development will result in “minimal delays and queues” and there is “substantial” capacity to cater for additional traffic.

The project, if approved, would be the latest addition to an industry flagged several years ago as key piece of the region’s future economy.
