Wide Bay’s incumbent candidate Llew O’Brien has unveiled a $5 million plan to help Gympie’ RSL services in the LNP party’s “biggest commitment” to the region if it wins government at the May 3 election.
This week Mr O’Brien announced plans to open the multimillion-dollar Veterans and Families Hub if the party is elected, saying the project would help support veterans and their families.
Flanked by incumbent New England MP and former party leader Barnaby Joyce, and members of Gympie’s RSL Sub-Branch community, Mr O’Brien said the hub would help connect veterans with support networks.
Mr O’Brien said the project would deliver “gold star” help to veterans if it goes ahead.
“We have more than 2000 veterans and their families living in the Gympie area and I am pleased an elected Coalition government will deliver better access to important assistance for them,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We’ve listened to our defence and veteran community about the need for additional support and will continue working closing to with them to deliver this new facility.
“The key with these centres is to work with local organisations who know exactly what local veterans need and provide a tailored local approach.
“I have been working alongside the Gympie RSL to develop their Veterans’ and Families’ Hub proposal, and I look forward to helping them deliver the new centre, which will be available to all current and former serving Australian Defence Force members, including reservists, and their families.”
Mr O’Brien is fighting for re-election to the seat he has held since 2016.
The Wide Bay is considered to be a safe seat, with Mr O’Brien being returned in 2022 by an 11.3 per cent margin despite a 3.6 per cent swing against the LNP in the seat.
However, his party is reportedly facing a tougher task of being returned to government after three years in opposition with latest polling figures putting Labor on track to be re-elected on May 3.
