Gympie-bred motorcycle racing sensation Joel Kelso has stepped in for an injured teammate to take part in the next two 2021 Moto3 World Championship races overseas.

The globetrotting young gun, originally from the Gold City before he moved to Darwin and then to Palma in Spain, has been called up by the KTM CIP – Green Power team to replace Austrian Maximilian Kofler, who suffered a back injury after a heavy crash at the Italian Grand Prix.

Kelso will race alongside CIP- Green Power teammate Kaito Toba at the German Grand Prix on June 20 and the Dutch Tourist Trophy a week later.

In a statement Kelso said he was grateful for the opportunity to take the opportunity to race in the Moto3 World Championship arena.

“I want to thank CIP – Green Power for this opportunity, I will do my best in these world championship races despite the fact that these tracks are new for me,” Kelso said.

“CIP-Green Power is a strong and experienced team, for sure they will help me perform the best. I want to wish Kofler a speedy recovery and also want to thank all my personal sponsors as well as 111 Management for making these races possible.”

Team owner Alain Bronec was enthusiastic about Kelso’s chances in the upcoming races.

“Obviously, I wish Maximilian a speedy recovery, as he still needs to rest before coming back with us. For the next two races, we will rely on Joel Kelso, a promising young Australian. He will be discovering the Sachsenring and Assen, but we are very confident that he will improve throughout the two weekends,” Bronec said.

“Once again, it is an Australian rider who will fly our colours after Remy Gardner who raced in the team before moving up to Moto2. Welcome Joel!”

Kelso also competes in the FIM Moto3™ Junior World Championship, with a ninth place finish his best result in the class so far.
