A young Gympie woman has been given a suspended jail term and told to complete her psychiatric rehabilitation after pleading guilty to robbing a man at an ATM machine three years ago.

Jessie Leena Hames, now 31, appeared via videolink from a rehabilitation facility in the Gympie District Court on Friday (July 16) to be sentenced on a charge of robbery with actual violence stemming from an incident in February 2018.

The court heard on that date Hames saw an older man withdrawing money at an ATM machine and grabbed his wallet in the process.

A scuffle between the two ensued and both received minor injuries as a result.

Hames also pleaded guilty to 16 summary offences including serious assault, possessing a knife in public, public nuisance, obstructing a police officer and breaching bail conditions eight times.

Judge Nathan Jarro called the summary offences “relatively minor” except for the serious assault, in which he said Hames was being looked after by paramedics and “an incident occurred”.

Judge Jarro noted Hames had received a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and had been appointed a public guardian by QCAT in July 2019 to help handle services and legal matters for her.

Judge Jarro said Hames had been residing in a secure unit since July 23, 2020, where a doctor’s report said she had shown improvement in mental state and behaviour, and would be ready for discharge into “suitable accommodation” once her rehabilitation was complete.

Judge Jarro gave Hames a head sentence of two years’ jail, suspended immediately for the same time frame. He noted Hames had spent 187 in pre-sentence custody.
