Gympie United Football Club has land available for a new field, but the new sport budget has left no room for new facilities.

Gympie Regional Council had originally allocated $1 million in its annual budget for sport in the Gympie region, but that funding was cut to $100,000 in October 2021, and then pulled altogether in April 2022.

Club president Troy Johnson said on Thursday there was land available for an extra field, but it needed to be “levelled out” and cleaned up before it could be used.

Mr Johnson said the council covered the maintenance costs at the One Mile Ovals, including mowing and line-marking paint.

The total maintenance cost was $400-600 a week, and could potentially rise in the future.

Daniel Green shared a screenshot of this email to Facebook, which detailed the $1M budget cut originally designated for Gympie sport.

Gympie United Football Club has about 600 members, with about 10 volunteers on the committee.

Those volunteers and community helpers took about four weeks to restore the club’s facilities from flood damage in 2022, and faced a $20,000 repair cost.

This sum does not include equipment replacement, which Mr Johnson predicted could be a similar hefty sum.

He said Gympie’s sporting facilities were outdated, and everyone except Gympie had received funds for expanded facilities, including the Sunshine Coast.

Sport was a huge part of the Gympie community, especially for kids to make new friendships and “keep them off the street”.

“You meet life mates,” he said.

Gympie needed money somehow to help out the sporting community.

Gympie Regional Council was contacted in regard to the Gympie United Soccer Club and their upcoming budget for the club.

The Gympie Times is campaigning to help its huge and largely forsaken sporting community. SOS: Save Our Sport.
