Gympie truck driver wakes from coma after life-threatening crash

A Gympie truck driver who lost both his legs following a horror crash is fighting to get his life back after being in a coma for almost a month.

A Gympie truck driver has taken a major step forward on the road to recovery, waking from a three-week coma after suffering serious injuries in an horrific crash on the D’Aguilar Hwy.

Kadeem Darlow was seriously injured on October 5 , 2023,when the truck he was driving collided with another on the D’Aguilar Hwy at Moodlu, about 60km north of Brisbane.

Mr Darlow was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital after being trapped in the wreckage of the truck for more than an hour.

His wife, Maghon Darlow, revealed in the wake of the crash the father of two had undergone more than 80 hours of surgery on his legs, wrists, arms, ribs, and hips.

Both his legs had to be amputated below the knees.

Mrs Darlow said on a GoFundMe launched for her husband she was told to say goodbye “on more than one occasion” but, on November 1, doctors woke him from the coma.

He now faced a long fight ahead “with things we take for granted,” she said.

“He amazes me every day with how strong he is fighting to get home to the family.

“He has to learn to talk, swallow and exercise his tongue just before being able to drink or eat to start with,” Mrs Darlow said.

“Then it’s learning to use his hands as they heal, rebuild muscle tone, balance before learning to move,” she said.

“It’s going to take lots of healing, determination and strength on his part.”

More than $19,000 of support has been raised for Mr Darlow since the online campaign was launched.

Several people had donated thousands of dollars to his recovery.

Mrs Darlow thanked those who had generously given to help her husband’s fight.

“Your support and donations are greatly appreciated and for this our family is most thankful,” she said.
