A young driver’s shocking and dangerous behaviour on one of the state’s worst roads has been caught on camera. See her get slapped with a hefty fine. VIDEO

Teen P-plater caught doing 135km/h, driving erratically on wet Bruce Highway

A Gympie teenager has been stung with more than $1200 in fines after police caught her speeding and driving erratically in wet conditions on the Bruce Highway.

The 18-year-old P-plater was caught on camera by officers near Howard on the Fraser Coast, on Sunday March 27.

Footage released by police shows the teen drifting in and out of the left hand lane on the wet road.

She can be seen first crossing onto the shoulder and narrowly missing putting her wheels on the grass verge, and then a little later she starts to cross a pair of double white divided lines.

After pulling the teen over, an officer rattles off a litany of her offences including swerving “from one side of the road to the other … crossing the double white lines on multiple occasions into the oncoming traffic, crossing the fog line to the left and almost going off the road, at one point, speeding up to 135km/h on the Bruce Highway in poor weather conditions”.

“Driving the way that you are, I can’t express to you how dangerous that was,” the officer says.

“You’ve endangered a bunch of other people, including us, on the road today.”

The teenage was fined $1209 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h, and $129 for crossing the driving lines.

She was docked six demerit points from her licence.

The fines were handed down ahead of a police blitz across the Wide Bay Burnett over the school holidays with 11 people having already lost their lives on the region’s roads.

Operation Corridor will continue in the Bundaberg area focusing on traffic interceptions on the main roads in and out of Bundaberg.

This operation is ongoing and has so far include more than 1,150 roadside breath tests.

Police in the wider Gympie and Maryborough areas will focus on heavily saturating the roads, including the highway, main roads and local roads, targeting the Fatal Five offences.

Speeding, drink or drug driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and driving while tired or distracted are all included in the Fatal Five, which are proven, yet avoidable, causes of serious or fatal traffic crashes.

Additional police will also be deployed to K’gari, Teewah and Rainbow Beach for the holidays, alongside many campers, to remind drivers that road rules apply on the sand, as they focus on seatbelts, speeding, drink and drug driving, and illegally modified and defective vehicles.
