Gympie council budget: $11m road work to be done

A $3 million bridge replacement and $880k upgrade of what many believe is Gympie worst inner city intersection are among the projects to get $11m spent on them as part of a $40m capital works program

Roads continue to be a focal point of Gympie Regional Council’s “back to basics” approach, with more than $11 million road upgrades put aside as part of a $40 million capital works program.

From bridge repairs to widening to sealing, the investment and work will be carried out at more than dozen locations spread across the region.

The biggest slice of the pie will be spent at Tandur Rd; more than $3 million is earmarked to replace a bridge on the stretch at Kybong.

It is not the only love for the road in this budget, with another $1.2 million to seal its dirt surface.

In the centre of town, the council will be undertaking an $883,000 upgrade at the intersections of Station Rd, Tozer St, Lady Mary Terrace and Chapel St near the Old Gympie train station.

Jones Hill’s McIntosh Creek Rd will be getting widened at a cost of $1 million, and another $52,000 is being pumped into the widening of Old Maryborough Rd near Victory College.

To the west of the city, bridges on Widgee Crossing Rd and Glastonbury Creek Rd are being replaced at a combined cost of more than $1.6 million.

Up north, Rammutt Rd, Hoopers Rd and Mudlo Rd are also on the list.

Stage two of Rammutt Rd’s upgrade will be finished at a cost of more than $1 million, while Hoopers Rd is being widened at a cost of $350,000 and $400,000 in flood rehabilitation work is being undertaken at Mudlo Rd.

East of the city a bridge at Ryan Rd will be replaced for $650,000, while $314,000 more will be spent widening Gap Rd.

Yellow Gully Rd’s floodway is being repaired, too, at an expected cost of $125,000.

Sandy Creek Rd is also being widened, with $170,000 budgeted for the job.
