Goomeri school has secured $296,000 in funding for a new pedestrian crossing on Munro Street.
Nanango LNP MP Deb Frecklington said the school and its P&C committee had been trying to get the funding for some time.
Transport Minister Bart Mellish said the School Transport Infrastructure Program had been incredibly successful, improving the safety and operation of schools through dedicated infrastructure projects that targeted road safety.
“The safety of school children is a priority. They are one of our most vulnerable road users and we will continue to work hard to support long-term solutions to school road safety issues,” he said.
“The Flashing School Zone Signs program complements the School Transport Infrastructure Program, actively reminding drivers of the presence of school children and school crossing supervisors.”
Ms Frecklington said the school P&C wrote to her in 2023 seeking support to install an improved pedestrian crossing at the Munro Street school entrance and that she had met with parents at the school to discuss the issue.
“While there is a crossing on McTaggart Street, the Munro Street entrance is busier and desperately needed improvement,” she said.
“I am very pleased to see that the state government has acknowledged the need at Goomeri State School to build a raised platform crossing (or ‘Wombat Crossing’) on Munro Street.
“This will improve safety dramatically for the students and families at Goomeri P-10 along with creating more certainty and awareness for road users at this location.
“I would like to congratulate principal Leon Doorackers, his team and the Toogoolawah SS P&C for their ongoing efforts to achieve this great result for the Goomeri SS P-10 community.
