The iconic Gympie Brodies building will soon be a thing of the past, with the structure scheduled for demolition next week to make way for two new possible developments.
The Brodies building, built in the 1980s, and the carpark, were both fenced off on Tuesday (June 1) in preparation for the demolition works, which will be begin in a week’s time.
An on-site builder said his team was marking out the boundaries and completing electrical checks to ensure a safe bulldozing process.
A development application was lodged earlier this year with Gympie Regional Council by InvoCare Australia to build a funeral parlour on the site, which has not yet reached approval status.
Plans to build a funeral parlour on part of the block fronting Channon Street and the Bruce Highway could be seen on a large sign outside the former Brodies.
The InvoCare funeral parlour is the second development application to be lodged for this site, as the council gave the green light for developers to transform part of the site into a new showroom for Supercheap Auto and a second retail store last year.
This latest application keeps the Supercheap showroom (which will replace a retail strip at its western edge) but substitutes the retail outlet for the funeral parlour.
The funeral parlour will include a 40-person chapel and 13 parking spaces, with 12 parking spots for customers visiting the new Supercheap Auto shop.
No cremations will be done on site.
Invocare’s application says changing the original retail outlet to a funeral parlour would reduce traffic on and around the site, which sits at the intersection of two of Gympie’s busiest arterials.
Approval for the new Supercheap showroom and the building intended to become home to the funeral parlour will remain active until 2026.
